If you are a breeder, know that certain risks that your pets incur are not covered by pet insurance. Many policies exclude accidents or injuries that are related to breeding, including special diets or vitamins or conditions caused by pregnancy or whelping, up to and including death of the dam and her offspring.

The Internet is a good place to start comparing companies that insure pet, as well as the pet insurance policies that they provide. Alternate sources of information include your veterinarian, who can tell you what companies that he or she deals with on a regular basis, and the company that provides our homeowners insurance.

Do not expect either the vet or your current insurance carrier to make specific insurance company recommendations, which could open them up to liability issues. It is up to you to determine which companies and policies will meet your needs, based on your own research.
