Specific training methods are clicker training and positive reinforcement: dogs repeat behavior that works.  A behavior that is being reinforced is working for the dog!  This is SO much kinder and more effective than correction based training.

I personally recommend Premiere Easy Walk Harnesses as an aid towards polite leash manners, and keep them in stock for my clients.
